Katara – the Cultural Village has launched Katara Summer Events 2020 to encourage and inspire many groups in Qatar to nurture their creativity through various activities and competitions.
The initiative will be presented remotely through its accounts on social media in line with the state’s precautionary measures in preventing the spread of Covid-19. In a statement, Katara said the event will include a variety of competitions and virtual shows focusing on heritage collections, handicraft, novel and fine-art, Meshwar and novel, Al-Dhad channel, and caricature.
Weekly theatre activities will also be organised by Katara, including a variety of lectures, seminars and workshops on culture, literature and art, as well as the online shows of Al Thuraya Planetarium during the summer.
Katara will award prizes to the winners of each of these competitions to encourage the audience to participate and to be creative.
The Heritage collections competition will see participants shooting videos with their mobile phones (not exceeding three minutes) that present a story of collections of traditional antique items. Each participant, 18 and above, and lives in Qatar, can submit three videos. Any video containing copyright (music, image) or inappropriate content will be excluded. The first prize winner will receive QR15,000, QR12,000, and QR10,000 for the first, second and third places, respectively. The deadline is on July 30.
Katara launched “Inspired by the women craft heritage”, dubbed as the first competition for women handicrafts under the umbrella of the Qatari Women’s Pen Forum. This competition aims to highlight the role of Qatari women in craft heritage and creativity, which serves as a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences, in addition to introducing their works and documenting the Qatari national identity. Candidates should be 18 years old and above or older and prefer working on areas related to women artisan heritage: Al-Marash, Sadu and Mukhala. Women who want to take part in this competition are required to submit a sample of products or handicrafts or souvenirs to the Qatari Women’s Pen Forum at Building 18 (first floor) not later than August 15. The samples should be specifically created for this competition. The first-place winner will receive QR25,000, second winner QR20,000 and the third winner QR15,000.
The novel and fine art competition will require participants to draw a painting for the cover of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel 2020 publication, in the categories of published and unpublished novels and unpublished boys’ novels. The winner will receive $500 and his painting and name will be on the cover of the novel.
Katara noted that those who are interested can register through the website of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel (www.katarnovels.com) or via e-mail (covers@kataranovels. com). The deadline is July 10. Winners of weekly competitions such as Meshwar and Novel will receive $1,000 while the Al-Dhad channel competition winners will also receive $1,000.
Katara caricatures competition will give winners $5,000 (first place), $4,000 (second) $3,000 (third), $2,000 (fourth) and $1000 (fifth). The entries have to be submitted no later than August 15 to cartoon@kataraforum.com by scanning or imaging in jpg or jpeg format.
The public can also follow performances inspired by the texts of an international or Arab play with the participation of a distinguished group of artistes. In addition to a variety of virtual exhibitions of fine-art artists, as well as seminars, lectures and weekly workshops related to culture, literature, heritage and the arts will also form part of this Katara initiative.
On the other hand, AlThuraya Planetarium will present many activities in astronomy and space, as the annular eclipse of the sun will be observed on June 21 live from Muscat through social media platforms of Katara.
