Doha: The Ministry of Education and Higher Education said today that it has agreed to increase the tuition fees for 28 private schools and kindergartens for the academic year 2019/2020. Ministry received 126 applications for fee change. There are 287 private schools and kindergartens operating in the country.
Director of Private Schools Licensing Department at the Ministry Hamad Al Ghali explained in a press conference the process those schools had to go through in order to get the tuition fees to increase. The fees increase approved for the 28 private schools and kindergartens range between 3 to 10 per cent. The ministry looks at reasons such as the school’s need for financial support, improving the academic and educational impact, financial deficit despite the school’s commitment to operational capacity, change in the school building, move to another school building and change in rental value.
15 schools and kindergartens got permission to increase their fees by 3 per cent while only 2 received a nod for 10 per cent increase.
As per ministry list, 1 school each will increase fees by 8, 6 and 4 per cent. 3 schools will increase by 7 per cent and the rest 5 will raise the fees by 5 per cent.
He also discussed why other schools failed to get the tuition fees they applied for. He said that the reasons included failure to attach three financial statements required to examine the financial performance of the school, the decline or lack of profits as a result of poor management rather than low fees, or due to the inaccurate or incomplete data among other reasons.
Al Ghali said that registration in all the schools will be from March 3 to October 17 of 2019. The deadline for registering students coming from abroad is the end of January 2020, he added. Students eligible for kindergarten must be born before September 30 of 2016. As for primary education, students must be born before September 30 of 2014.
